The Art Engager: Reimagining guided experiences in museums - Claire Bown
Project Description
Claire Bown's "The Art Engager" book design masterfully combines form and function to create an engaging and accessible reading experience. The design decisions reflect the book's core message of reimagining guided experiences in museums, with careful attention paid to visual hierarchy, typography, and layout.
The typography chosen for the book employs a clean, readable serif font for the body text, enhancing legibility while creating a professional aesthetic. Complementary sans-serif fonts are used for headers and subheaders, providing clear visual separation between sections. This thoughtful typographic approach ensures that readers can easily navigate through the content without feeling overwhelmed.
The layout of "The Art Engager" incorporates ample white space, allowing the content to breathe and reducing visual clutter. This design choice not only improves readability but also aligns with the book's focus on engagement and clarity in museum experiences. The carefully selected color palette further enhances this effect, with accent colors highlighting key concepts and sections, aiding navigation and reinforcing the book's structure.
In terms of terminology and readability, the design integrates visual elements to support key concepts introduced throughout the book, such as the "CHOOSE framework" and "Discussion Cycle." These ideas are presented alongside graphics or diagrams, created by cover designer Cigdem @crocusincreation, making them easily digestible for readers.
By integrating these design elements, "The Art Engager" not only conveys its content effectively but also serves as a prime example of how thoughtful design can enhance the reader's engagement with the material.
As always, it was an absolute pleasure working with you Claire, Hannah and Cigdem.

About the author
Claire Bown
“Back in 2011 I discovered that museum educators were struggling to meet the demands of leading inquiry-based guided experiences with art and objects.
At the same time, I found out that teachers weren’t getting what they wanted from museum programmes either.
These two seemingly unconnected issues had something in common: engagement, or rather, the lack of it.
This realisation inspired me to start designing a new approach with engagement at its core, for educators to easily use on guided experiences.
My aims for the Thinking Museum® Approach were simple: to create an approach that was effective, simple and practical, as well as being grounded in specific foundations and practices that create engagement.”
