Project Description

Working closely with author Gian Walhain, I brought his vision for Baas in Eigen Brein to life through thoughtful and engaging interior design. The aim was to create a publication that feels clear, accessible, and visually stimulating, while supporting the content and making it easy for readers to navigate.

The book is designed in full colour, with a carefully considered palette used to distinguish different sections and chapters. Colour-coded tabs provide an intuitive way to find and return to specific parts of the book, enhancing the overall reading experience.

The design is beautifully complemented by the incredible illustrations of Cigdem Guven, whose work adds personality, energy, and visual depth to the publication. Together, the typography, colour palette, layout, and illustrations create a cohesive interior that reflects the character of Gian’s work and makes the content inviting to explore.

Baas in Eigen Brein is a practical and inspiring guide for education professionals who want to take greater ownership of their work, wellbeing, and professional development. Drawing on the principles of Stoic philosophy, Gian Walhain explores how teachers, mentors, coaches, and other educators can focus on what they can influence: their own thoughts, choices, and actions.

Through relatable examples, contemporary research, humour, and practical exercises, the book connects timeless philosophical ideas with the everyday realities of education. It offers a refreshing perspective on dealing with pressure, uncertainty, and change, while encouraging readers to rediscover meaning, confidence, and enjoyment in their work.

More than just a methodology

Over the past 10 years, GIAN WALHAIN has been involved in various initiatives to improve and support education. As a teacher and mentor, but also as an external advisor to management, training coordinator, program manager, and trainer. The methodology he developed for improving relationships with students is based on Stoic philosophy. Further study taught him that while this philosophy is valuable knowledge for everyone, it is indispensable when playing a role within the current education system.

It creates a dynamic in which being part of a school becomes a joy. He is convinced that craftsmanship as a guide for teenagers starts with a basic knowledge of both psychology and philosophy. Only with this can you unlock the true potential of both yourself and the students you guide.
